Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to assess and manage medical emergencies in the backcountry until evacuation is possible. Taught by Amrit Ale, a qualified Wilderness Emergency Medicine Technician (WEMT) and Wilderness First Aid Instructor certified through SOLO, one of the world’s foremost wilderness medicine schools, our WFA courses cover patient assessment, trauma management, altitude sickness, fractures, wound care, environmental emergencies and emergency evacuation protocols. Whether you are planning a Himalayan expedition, guiding in remote terrain, or simply want to be prepared for the unexpected while you play in the mountains with friends and family, this course provides essential, potentially life-saving skills. Courses are available at certification levels from Basic Wilderness First Aid through to full WEMT.

Nepal’s diverse geology offers world-class rock climbing for every level, from beginner crags in the Kathmandu Valley to serious multi-pitch routes on the walls of the Everest, Annapurna and Langtang regions. Our rock-climbing courses introduce participants to fundamental skills: footwork, body positioning, belaying, knot craft, anchor building and route-reading, through a progressive, safety-first methodology. More advanced courses cover lead climbing, trad techniques and multi-pitch systems. Taught by internationally trained instructors with deep knowledge of Nepal’s best climbing venues, our courses are as much about building confidence and mental resilience as they are about technical ability. Rock climbing is also a powerful experiential learning tool for groups: it demands communication, trust and precise focus in equal measure.

There are few more exhilarating environments in which to learn a technical skill than a frozen Himalayan waterfall. Himalayan Quests’ ice climbing instruction is led by Amrit Ale, who has spent over fifteen years as a volunteer ice climbing instructor for the Khumbu Climbing Centre, the same programme that prepares Everest’s high-altitude Sherpas for the season’s technical demands. Participants learn front-pointing technique with crampons, ice axe placement, self-arrest, screw placement for anchors and top-roping systems on ice. Introductory sessions are available for those entirely new to the discipline, while more advanced modules cover leading on ice, mixed terrain and multi-pitch ice routes. Nepal’s winter season, particularly in the Everest, Annapurna and Langtang regions, offers exceptional ice formation for training and adventure climbing alike.

Nepal is one of the world’s premier white-water destinations, with rivers dropping from 8,000-metre peaks to sub-tropical lowlands within a matter of kilometres. Amrit grew up on these rivers, learning to read currents and paddle rapids on the Aadhi Khola before he could drive and that intimate knowledge of Nepal’s waterways underpins every rafting and kayaking programme we offer. Introductory rafting courses on mellower stretches of the Trishuli or Seti rivers build paddling fundamentals and river-reading skills in a safe, guided environment. More advanced programmes tackle the technical Class IV and V rapids of the Bhote Koshi, Karnali, and Sun Koshi, among others. Kayaking instruction ranges from flatwater basics and pool sessions through to river running and basic playboating. All participants receive thorough safety briefings and are accompanied by experienced, certified river guides.

In an era of GPS dependence, the ability to navigate confidently using a map and compass remains a fundamental and potentially life-saving wilderness skill. Our map reading and navigation courses are taught in Nepal’s diverse terrain from forested foothills to high-altitude moraine, giving participants hands-on practice in genuinely challenging, consequential environments. Course content covers topographic map interpretation, compass bearings and triangulation, contour reading, route planning, GPS as a supplementary tool, and decision-making under navigational uncertainty. For trekking leaders, expedition team members, and outdoor educators, proficient navigation is a non-negotiable professional competency. For individuals, it is the skill that transforms a trekker into a genuine backcountry traveler; independent, confident and safe.

Great leaders are not made in boardrooms; they are tested, refined and revealed in the outdoors. Himalayan Quests’ Outdoor Leadership Training draws directly on the NOLS leadership curriculum and Amrit’s extensive experience leading expeditions, and experiential learning programmes across Nepal, India and the Rocky Mountains. Participants develop practical leadership competencies including group management, risk assessment, decision-making under pressure, communication in high-stress environments, environmental ethics and expedition planning. Courses are delivered in Nepal’s backcountry; on multi-day treks, river journeys, and climbing programmes, ensuring that leadership theory is immediately applied in contexts where the stakes are real. This programme is particularly suited to school groups, university outdoor societies and aspiring trek leaders or guides seeking professional development.

Our host family programme places travellers in carefully selected homestays across Nepal, where they become temporary members of the household rather than visitors observing from the outside.
